Market coverage, not a quality ranking
The index has 24 street-food guides. To compare them, we count dishes tied to a named place rather than listed as nationwide, then look at the share of the menu in the budget band. Vietnam leads with 6 place-tagged dishes, followed by China (6), Italy (5), Singapore (4) and Indonesia (4). This is a measure of how specific the index is, not a claim about which country has the best street food.
Dishes tied to a named city, market or neighbourhood. Nationwide dishes are excluded because they cannot be pinned to a stall.
The budget share
Across these 24 destinations, 73% of indexed items sit in the budget band. Vietnam (100%), Singapore (92%), Malaysia (91%), Taiwan (85%) and Indonesia (83%) top the price table. High budget share is what you would expect from a street-food guide: the format is built for cheap, fast eating, and the index reflects that.

How to read the table
A destination with many place-tagged dishes gives you a more specific shopping list: markets, streets and neighbourhoods rather than a national menu. A destination with a high budget share is easier on the wallet, but not necessarily better. Use the two columns together: a deep list with a high budget share is the most practical combination for a first trip.
Budget bands are planning estimates. A famous stall can charge more than a neighbourhood restaurant, and a market price can change with the season. The guides link to the dishes, not to fixed prices.

Street food: common questions
Which destination has the most place-tagged street dishes?
Vietnam has 6, followed by China (6), Italy (5) and Singapore (4).
Is this a ranking of the best street food?
No. It measures how many dishes the index ties to a named place, and how much of the menu is in the budget band. Quality is not part of the calculation.
How many street-food guides are there?
24 destinations have a dedicated street-food guide, linked from the table above.
Why is budget share different from price?
Budget share is the proportion of indexed items in the budget band, not an average price. It shows the shape of the menu rather than the cost of one meal.
